As part of this move, the existing MRC Prion Unit at UCL will transfer as a University Unit into the Institute, becoming part of the Faculty of Brain Sciences and School of Life and Medical Sciences.

The Institute of Prion Diseases will deliver a national centre of excellence which pursues a major long-term research strategy in Prion and related diseases.

Commenting on the transfer Professor David Lomas, Vice Provost (Health) and Head of the UCL School of Life & Medical Sciences, said:

" "I warmly welcome the MRC Prion Unit to UCL. I am confident that this new alliance will support high-quality research with the aim of improving human health, produce skilled researchers, advance and disseminate knowledge and technology to improve the quality of life and economic competitiveness in the UK, and promote dialogue with the public about medical research."

Alan Thompson, Dean of the Faculty of Brain Sciences added:

" "One of the key elements of the Faculty is translational neuroscience - encouraging joint working across basic and clinical areas that results in new treatments for patients. Nowhere is this more important than in the field of neurodegeneration. Bringing the immense expertise within the Prion Unit into UCL's Faculty of Brain Sciences will encourage greater integration and accelerate success in identifying new treatments."
