Spotlight on Dr Phillip Sherrard

11 July 2017

This week the spotlight is on Dr Phillip Sherrard, Education Fellow, UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science.

Phillip Sherrard

What is your role and what does it involve?

I am an anaesthetic registrar at UCLH which involves providing anaesthetics for routine operating lists as well as being on an on-call rota coordinating emergency anaesthetic work in A+E, obstetrics and urgent surgery out of hours.

My other role is as an education fellow within the perioperative medicine department. This has involved creating the perioperative medicine MOOC which starts on 3 July, as well as coordinating a special study module in anaesthetics and critical care for the final year medical students.

How long have you been at UCL and what was your previous role?

I am still a junior doctor so I rotate around hospitals regularly. I have been at UCL since August 2016, prior to that I was working clinical full time at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals.

What working achievement or initiative are you most proud of?

The perioperative medicine MOOC I am currently developing is the project I am most proud of. Creating this course has taken a monumental effort from our extended expert faculty and our small production team and we're very proud to launch it this summer.

Tell us about a project you are working on now which is top of your to-do list?

Again, that would be the perioperative MOOC. It is a free to study online course being launched through the Futurelearn social learning platform. The goal is to educate a multidisciplinary team about perioperative medicine, an emerging specialty which aims to improve care for high-risk surgical patients. It launches in July this year and people can sign up now.
