UCL Libraries: 3 hidden gems closer to home

With exam season well and truly underway, you might be in need of a change of scenery to inspire you to revise.

Royal Free Library Here are three lesser-known study spots away from central campus that you may want to check out.

1. Royal Free Hospital Medical Library

The Royal Free Hospital Medical Library is situated on the ground floor of the Royal Free Hospital, located within walking distance of Hampstead Heath. It hosts a variety of study spaces across three floors with over 65 study spaces and 75 computer workstations.

The ground floor study area is light and spacious, and houses books that covers topics rnaging from clinical medicine and medical science, to nursing, allied health professions and health.

On the first floor there are designated areas for quiet study and bookable rooms for group discussion and presentations, including full AV presentation facilities.

IT facilities include 12 laptops, which can be borrowed from self-service cabinets Monday to Friday 8am-8pm. You have access to printing, scanning and photocopying through two multifunctional devices.

Access to UCL computers is available on all floors, including a large cluster room on the first floor. The library is open until 10pm Monday to Friday and is also open 9am-5pm on Saturdays (except during August).

From April to July the library is open 7 days a week, including 11am-5pm on Sundays.

We think you will find our library a relaxed and friendly alternative to studying on the main campus.

2. Joint Library of Ophthalmology

Located in Bath Street, near Moorfields Eye Hospital and Old Street tube station you can find the Joint Library of Ophthalmology which is situated on the lower ground floor of the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. 

There are 11 UCL Desktop computers, photocopying, printing and scanning facilities and 17 study spaces.  It is a quiet library, so a good place to study in peace. It also houses the Moorfields Museum (pictured). 

The library is open Monday to Friday 8am-9pm and 9am-1pm on weekends and bank holidays. 

Please note there is a mandatory fire tour before you may use this library.

3. UCL Institute of Orthopaedics library

The UCL Institute of Orthopaedics library is a popular study spot for students living in North London. The Library is located on the first floor of the Sir Herbert Seddon Teaching Centre, on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital site in Stanmore.

The friendly librarians can provide expert support and advice on using electronic resources and help with searching the collections of musculoskeletal sciences, clinical Orthopaedics, Nursing, Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering which are housed in this library. 

There are 15 UCL Desktop PCs, study spaces with Wifi and Print@UCL for scanning and printing, perfect for revising, especially if you don't fancy a long commute into Bloomsbury.

The libary is open Monday to Thursday 8am-8pm. On Fridays it is open 8.30am-5pm and on Saturdays it is open 10am-4pm.
