Seven questions with Annie Warren

27 May 2016

This week we put seven questions to Annie Warren, a final year BA French and Italian student set to graduate this summer.

Seven questions with Annie Warren Annie is also a Global Ambassador for UCL, providing support to international students and outgoing study abroad students.

Why are you interested in studying French and Italian and what do you plan to do in the future?

I've always loved literature, history and philosophy, and studying languages means I can do them all with the added bonus of a year abroad.

I haven't yet decided what I'd like to do in the future, though I have a few ideas, Long-term, I'd love to go into translation or publishing. As for the immediate future, I'm hoping to move to Austria for a year to teach English, study German and learn to ski. After that, we'll see!

What is the most interesting thing you've done, seen or got involved with while at UCL?

During my final year, I got involved with the Global Ambassador scheme which was a wonderful opportunity and so much fun. One of the most rewarding events we got involved in as Global Ambassadors was International Student Orientation Week, where I worked on the welcome desk in the Quad, greeting students and answering their questions.

It was lovely to meet the new international students and give them advice and directions. Remembering what a wonderful time I had on my year abroad made me want to ensure others had the same experience of London - after all, it's one of the best cities in the world.

We also had the chance to do Q&A sessions on stage (which was a new experience for me) and help out at the Study Abroad Fair. I really enjoying working as part of such a fun and vibrant team, promoting two of the things I'm most passionate about at UCL - London as a city and the year abroad!

Have you discovered any hidden gems during your time at UCL?

My friends and I spend a lot of time in the café above Paperchase on Tottenham Court Road called Tinderbox because you can get a free filter coffee there every week with a Paperchase card. It's a lovely place to study… or even just sunbathe and people-watch out of its huge windows!

Also, though it's less of a secret by now, the Hare Krishna curry on offer every day from SOAS is delicious and a complete life saver if you're on a tight budget - as long as you're prepared to make at least a small donation and wait in line!

Give us your top three things to do/see/go to in London:

1. See a musical

2. Go for a walk round Hampstead Heath

3. Have a cocktail at Reverend Jw Simpson

If you were Provost for the day what one thing would you do?

I would start looking into possible ways of making university accommodation more affordable for students, or maybe draw up plans for an extension to the library.

Who inspires you and why?

I don't think I've been inspired by any one person in particular, but I generally find women who are unapologetically themselves and who strive to do the things they love and stand up for what they believe in very inspirational, whether they are famous or someone I know personally.

What would it surprise people to know about you?

That I know the first Harry Potter book almost by heart. Actually, maybe that's not that surprising.
