Indian medicine book to be featured on BBC Radio 4
15 May 2016
In the Bonesetter's Waiting Room: Travels through Indian Medicine, the second book by Dr Aarathi Prasad (UCL Grand Challenges), will be BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week from 23 May.
The book examines the many faces of medicine in modern India. From Mumbai's urban jungle to Hyderabad's Mughal splendour, Dr Prasad explores how Indian medicine came to be the way it is: shaped by unique challenges and opportunities, uniting cutting-edge technological developments with ancient cultural traditions, fuelled by political changes which transformed the lives of millions and moulded by the energy of forceful individuals.
Along the way, she watches an asthma 'cure' that involves swallowing a live fish, visits laboratories conducting ground-breaking research into ancient systems such as Ayurveda, and treks to a remote jungle camp, where doctors risk their lives to bring healthcare to the people who need it most.
The book was inspired by Wellcome Collection's 2016 Mumbai exhibition and broader programme of events exploring India's rich plurality of cultures of medicine, healing and wellbeing. It will be launched at the Wellcome Collection, on 2 June, featuring Dr Prasad in conversation with historian and author William Dalrymple. She will appear on BBC Radio Four's Start the Week on 6 June.
