Are you a documentary filmmaker, audio producer or web developer? Know it Wall needs you!

18 April 2016

Did Shakespeare really write Romeo and Juliet? How did physicists detect the Higgs boson?

Know it Wall com/" target="_self">Know it Wall (KiW) is a newly founded public engagement website, based at UCL, that aims to popularise research on these and many other fascinating questions - across all disciplines, from arts to sciences.

KiW takes 1,000-word scripts that academics write on research worth sharing with the wider public and turns these into short audio-documentaries (less than 10 minutes long). Once produced, both audio-documentaries and scripts are published on KiW's website - knowitwall.com - as well as on iTunes, Soundcloud and Medium.

An expansion to YouTube, with video-documentaries, is currently in development. For that reason, KiW is building a video production team and is looking for talented filmmakers (undergraduate or postgraduate students) to join it.

The opportunity is unpaid (no one at KiW is paid), but those who end up joining KiW will have the chance to work closely with leading academics in their fields, many of whom hold extensive experience in public engagement, from BBC documentary presenters to radio show hosts.

In addition to the roles in the video production team, there are also opportunities to join KiW's audio production team as well as the programming team. For the audio production team, KiW is looking for female narrators, especially to help voice scripts written by female academics.

For the programming team, KiW is looking for web developers, especially those with an interest in web scraping and data visualisation, to work on the content aggregation side of KiW (currently in development).

If you're interested, contact Miguel Dos Santos (UCL Philosophy), specifying the role you are applying for, your degree at UCL, and any relevant experience: miguel.santos.13@ucl.ac.uk

Members of underrepresented groups in academia are strongly encouraged to apply.

Summary of opportunities:

  • Video production team: filmmakers with an interest in documentary filmmaking.
  • Audio production team: female narrators.
  • Programming team: web developers with an interest in web scraping and data visualisation (we use Python (Flask) on DigitalOcean).
