In order to help deliver UCL's new

Pro-Vice-Provosts (Regional) ucl.ac.uk/global/strategy" target="_self">Global Engagement Strategy, and to share and enhance our knowledge of different regions and raise our global profile in them, Dame Nicola Brewer, Vice-Provost (International) is appointing seven Pro-Vice-Provost (Regional) roles. Appointment to these roles will be for an initial period of three years.

Each Pro-Vice-Provost (Regional) will play an important strategic role in shaping and communicating UCL's global activities in a particular part of the world.

The appointment terms of the current team of five Pro-Vice-Provosts (International) concluded on 30 June 2015. UCL is reconfiguring these roles as seven Pro-Vice-Provosts (Regional) in support of the Vice-Provost (International) and her team.

Applications from senior staff

We are therefore seeking applications from senior UCL staff, at the level of Professor or Reader, who are looking for opportunities to provide and develop academic leadership.

We would particularly like to encourage women, and men or women from an ethnic minority, to apply, as they are under-represented within UCL at senior level.

These roles will suit those who have existing experience of, or interest in, developing UCL's partnerships in one (or more) of the following seven regions:

  • Africa and the Middle East
  • East Asia (China; Hong Kong; Taiwan; South Korea; Japan; Australia; New Zealand; New Guinea; Pacific Islands)
  • South East Asia (Indonesia; Malaysia; Singapore; Cambodia; Laos; Thailand; Vietnam)
  • South Asia (India; Bangladesh; Nepal; Pakistan; Sri Lanka)
  • Europe (51 Independent states including 28 EU member states)
  • North America
  • Latin America

Duties and responsibilities

An outline of the duties and responsibilities of the Pro-Vice-Provosts (Regional) can be found in the Academic Manual at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/academic-manual/part-8/pro-vice-provosts-regional

The primary responsibilities for each Pro-Vice-Provost (Regional) will be to:

  • chair the relevant Regional Network meetings (2 hours) once a term, with all administrative support provided by the Vice-Provost (International)'s team, and potentially join any relevant Anchor Partnership steering group, also likely to meet once a term (1-2 hours);
  • identify and be a point of contact for 'Country Correspondents' within the relevant Regional Network;
  • host up to 4 senior visiting international delegations per year, as requested by the Provost or the Vice-Provost (International);
  • act as ambassador and advocate for UCL and its Global Engagement Strategy when travelling;
  • be a conduit for information between actual and potential international partners and the Vice-Provost (International) and Provost;
  • attend an annual meeting of Pro-Vice-Provosts (Regional) and Vice-Deans (International).

There is no FTE percentage specified for these roles. It will be up to successful candidates and their Deans to decide how much time can reasonably be devoted to the role, given other commitments. As for the new Vice-Dean (International) roles being created in each Faculty, the Pro-Vice-Provost (Regional) function will not attract an honorarium. Travel and other expenses will be considered on a case by case basis.

Applications should be in the form of a letter, together with a short CV, to Dame Nicola by email to vpinternational@ucl.ac.uk, by 12 noon on Monday 7 September 2015. If required, short interviews will be held in September.

The decision on appointments to these roles will be made by the Vice Provost (International).
