Award-winning documentary filmmaker to host Open City Docs Easter filmmaking school

13 February 2015

This Easter, students at UCL's Open City Docs School will have the chance to take part in masterclasses with award-winning documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto.

Kim Longinotto is a prolific documentary filmmaker who has made films for over thirty years and won countless awards

Kim's work includes Divorce Iranian Style, Sisters in Law, and last not but not least Dreamcatcher, which saw Kim take home the World Cinema Documentary Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this month.

Kim will host a series of masterclasses at the Open City Docs Easter filmmaking school in which she will explore her work on the various films throughout her career, giving advice on directing film and shooting a film. She will be on hand to listen to students' ideas through pitching sessions, where she can provide feedback using her expertise and many years of experience as a world-class filmmaker.

The essential skills

As well as getting insight into Kim's experience, students will acquire the technical skills needed to complete a documentary video project to broadcast standards. The course is designed to teach participants the basics of producing, directing, shooting and editing - the four core skills needed to become a successful self-shooting director.

The three-week course is aimed at anyone who wants to make a start in documentary filmmaking, training beginner filmmakers and introducing them to a range of filmmaking crafts. There are no pre-requisites for the course, except great ideas and enthusiasm. This course is also a perfect opportunity for research students to learn how to use the medium of film to communicate their research to a wider audience.

Background to Open City Docs School

Founded by Michael Stewart, Senior Lecturer in UCL Anthropology, Open City Docs aims to create a space in London to nurture and champion the art of creative documentary and non-fiction filmmakers.

Open City Docs School runs a number of filmmaking courses, from term-length courses that can be taken for Masters credit to courses that run over evenings or weekends and cover a range of filmmaking crafts and theory.
