New Dean for UCL's Faculty of Medical Sciences

Professor David Lomas PhD ScD FRCP FMedSci is set to join UCL as Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and Chair of Medicine from 1st January 2013.

Professor Lomas is Professor of Respiratory Biology in the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Physician at Addenbrooke's and Papworth Hospitals. He has been the Deputy Director of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research since 2002.

Professor Lomas runs programmes at the University of Cambridge for developing clinical and basic scientists, including the Wellcome Trust PhD programme for clinicians, and a 4 year basic science PhD programme in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research. He is Chair of the Population and Systems Medicines Board at the MRC, the Grants Advisory Committee of the Alpha-1 Foundation (US), the GSK Respiratory Therapy Area Board and the Research Committee of the British Lung Foundation, where he is also a Trustee. His research interests are focused on the pathobiology of α1-antitrypsin deficiency, the serpinopathies and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

The Faculty of Medical Sciences brings together UCL Medical School and five of UCL's Divisions and Institutes. With its focus on experimental medicine and links to the Francis Crick Institute and major teaching hospitals in London, the Faculty of Medical Sciences forms a powerhouse of medical science research and teaching with local, national and global impact. Staff in the Faculty undertake world-leading research and teaching in areas that range from viral oncology to connective tissue disease and oral health. The Faculty and its component parts create an outstanding and vibrant environment for study and research.

This is an important time for the Faculty. There are great opportunities ahead, and I am convinced that in David Lomas we have identified the outstanding leadership necessary to take full advantage of them.

Professor Lomas will be the second Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, a role previously held by Professor Patrick Maxwell, who was recently appointed to be the Regius Professor of Physic at the University of Cambridge.

On the appointment of Professor David Lomas, Professor Sir John Tooke, Vice Provost Health says: "I am absolutely delighted that we have appointed a clinician scientist of Professor Lomas' calibre to lead the Faculty of Medical Sciences. His scientific credentials coupled with his passion for developing the next generation and his industrial experience make him ideally suited to lead the Faculty's ambitious development in the coming years."

On his appointment Professor David Lomas says: "UCL is a very highly regarded university and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the Faculty through its next stage of development. I relish the challenge of supporting UCL's educational and scientific endeavours to inspire the next generation of clinicians and scientists."
