Festival of Volunteering at UCL

15 May 2012

UCL and UCLU are launching a two-week Festival of Volunteering this summer.

Festival of Volunteering The programme will include talks, workshops and social events, as well as lots of practical opportunities to get involved in short term volunteering.

John Braime of the Volunteering Services Unit (VSU) explained: "UCL is becoming well known as a place where students want to engage with the community. They want to feel as if they're taking part in the life of London, and recognise that volunteering is a good way to do it. We've organised this fortnight to make it easy for students to get involved, and to give them a taste of what volunteering is all about."

Highlights of the Festival will include workshops on working with children, getting funding for community projects, and on turning your volunteering into CV gold. The VSU's community partners have organised a series of one-off volunteering events, and the student-run Volunteering Society will also be holding their annual summer picnic.

Amy Evans, UCLU Student Activities Officer, said: "Be a 'yes' person and sign up for some one-off volunteering! It doesn't require a huge time commitment and everything is arranged for you so all you need to do is pick a project you are interested in. This is such a fantastic opportunity and I hope that a lot of UCL students will take advantage of it."

Staff from the VSU will be in the front Quad every day during the Festival from 11am - 3pm, 21st May - 3rd June, to answer questions and give advice about summer volunteering opportunities.
