UCL Graduate Programme in Comparative Literature

The MA is taught on an interdepartmental basis and gives students great flexibility in shaping their own course of study. At PhD level, it promotes original research in literary and cultural studies at an international level, in the English-speaking world and beyond.

The MA programme has been described as: "A taught graduate degree which aims to give students a thorough understanding of modern theories of literature, the contexts of literature and the interactions between literatures. It also provides practical experience in literary studies and attracts students from a wide range of backgrounds."

The programme favours innovative approaches to literary and cultural studies and research with a comparative, cross-cultural and interdisciplinary focus. Examples include research in literary and cultural theory and comparative gender studies and performance studies.

Language and literature departments from across the Arts and Humanities Faculty contribute to the programme, including the School of European Languages, Culture and Society (SELCS), the Departments of English, Greek and Latin, Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES).

A cooperation agreement with the nearby School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) ensures a global coverage that few institutions can rival.
