Historic grant for UCL-led study

9 July 2012

The Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) has awarded its first grant in the field of Human Rights to a UCL-led study researching the impact of human rights treaties in the Gulf region.

Dr Basak Cali This will be the first study of its kind.

The objective of the two-year study is to investigate the domestic impact of international human rights treaties through Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member States.

The $660,000 grant was awarded to a consortium of university experts led by Dr Başak Çali (UCL Department of Political Science), working with Dr Nazila Ghanea (University of Oxford), Professor Mehran Kamrava (Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Qatar) and Dr Yaser Khalileh (University of Qatar).

Lead principal investigator, Dr Çali, explained: "This study will offer new insights into the domestic effects of human rights treaties in a much under-studied region".

The results of the research will shed light on a region that is often neglected by social sciences and international relations.  The findings will also constitute an important resource and policy-guiding document for a variety of stakeholders, including for the States themselves, national human rights institutions, NGOs in the region and the United Nations. The data collected will also offer insights into the treaty ratification process.
