Careers help available for UCL students

The UCL Careers Service plays an integral part in preparing students for life beyond their degree.

They offer advice and support to UCL students at every stage of their education and continue to do so, even after graduation.

The service provides guidance on potential careers, looking and applying for jobs and initial employer interactions. They run a number of workshops covering areas such as CV building and job application checking and also offer one-to-one interview practice, group mock assessment centres and careers fairs.

The Careers Consultants involved come from a variety of professional backgrounds - ranging from law, accountancy and academia through to marketing and advertising professionals. They bring this knowledge and experience into individual guidance sessions with students.
Each department within UCL has a dedicated Careers Consultant who can provide tailored careers support for the students in that area. 

Karen Barnard, Director of the UCL Careers Service explained: "A good degree from UCL is one thing that graduate employers certainly value; however, they also require students to have a portfolio of skills as well as work experience from their time at university. This is where the Careers Service can help."

UCL Careers Service caters to the needs of all students. Each year over 500 employers attend events facilitated by UCL Careers Service, including careers fairs, presentations and skill development activities. A recent example is the UCL Focus on Management course, which offers the opportunity to develop employability skills by working on business case studies - a task often seen at assessment centres.

International students are also able to benefit from the service. UCL recognises that they will often require a different kind of support to UK undergraduates and have a dedicated additional programme available to support their specific needs.

There is also dedicated support for Masters students (via the QuickFix programme), PhDs and alumni. Recent alumni can sign up for GradClub which provides further support for two years after graduation and offers a tailored programme of events and workshops.

All students and GradClub members are encouraged to sign up to UCLAlert!, which highlights relevant job opportunities and careers events as soon as they become available.
