Afternoon tea celebrates legacy giving to UCL

UCL President and Provost Professor Malcolm Grant recently hosted UCL alumni, staff, former staff and friends at an afternoon tea in the South Cloisters to celebrate legacy giving to UCL.

The Provost thanked all the guests whose legacy gifts totalled over £10 million of an overall £80 million pledged to UCL through legacy bequests. He encouraged others to consider this type of gift to preserve the richness of UCL life in years to come.

The guests had a wealth of experiences of UCL from 1940 to the present day, but all enjoyed the opportunity to meet the Provost, chat to staff, guests and current students, and to see what their legacy gift could achieve. Baroness Flather (Laws 1955) spoke of her decision to leave a gift in her will to UCL as an opportunity to say thank you, as it is only now, reflecting back on her life, that she recognises how impactful her time at UCL was. The two student speakers, Ben Wakeham, (Philosophy & Economics 2011), and Kevin Conroy (Security Studies 2010) spoke passionately about their time at UCL, and both appreciated that they would not have completed their studies were it not for support from donors.

Lori Manders, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, says ""Legacy giving is an important part of securing more philanthropic funds to support UCL. DARO are working hard to increase planned giving in this way and encourage our alumni , staff, friends and the wider community to identify areas they would like to support."
