Over £1m of grants from the Leverhulme Trust

The grant winners and their projects are detailed below.

• Dr Chris Blackman (UCL Chemistry): £206,151 to research nanotechnology for gas sensors
• Dr Sarah-Jayne Blakemore (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience): £236,193 to conduct research into the genetic influence on the development of the human rostral prefrontal cortex
• Professor Iain Borden (UCL Bartlett School of Architecture): £49,772 to support a student bursary scheme
• Professor Mohan Edirisinghe and Dr Eleanor Stride (UCL Mechanical Engineering): £87,165 for the generation of novel structures using co-flow in needles in an electric field
• Professor Andres Ruiz-Linares (UCL Genetics, Evolution and Environment): £122,000 to develop a network for the evolution of Latin American populations
• Professor Philip Schofield (UCL Laws): £158, 516 to research Jeremy Bentham's writings on sex, law and religion
• Professor Sacha Stern (UCL Hebrew and Jewish Studies): £104,790 to research the Jewish calendar in al-Biruni and other early Islamic sources
• Professor Max Telford (UCL Genetics, Evolution and Environment): £178,177 to undertake research into the convergence or homology of larvae and guts in animal evolution

The Leverhulme Trust makes awards for the support of research and education. It places particular emphasis on the originality and significance of the projects proposed, the ability to judge and take appropriate risk in the project, and the removal of barriers between traditional disciplines.
