UCL has risen in The Sunday Times rankings from 6th to 4th place in the UK and is runner up in the newspaper's University of the Year awards.
This is UCL's highest ever position in this league table and follows a strong performance in the latest national research assessment exercise (RAE).
UCL also bucks the general trend among inner-city institutions to produce above-average results in the student satisfaction survey, and has the second best results in London for this measure. Academics across Britain also rate UCL highly, placing it in 4th place across a range of 30 subjects in a peer survey.
About the guide
The Sunday Times University Guide 2010 provides students and their parents with an invaluable first reference point on the path to finding a university place. It contains full profiles of all universities and the leading colleges of higher education. The league table is drawn up from criteria including student satisfaction, teaching and research quality, ratings from head teachers' and academic peer review, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, graduate unemployment levels and university dropout rates.
UCL context
UCL is London's leading
multidisciplinary university, with 8,000 staff and 22,000 students.
Over 140 nationalities are represented among UCL students with overseas
students making up nearly a third of the student body.
We are now ranked seventh in the world by the Times
Higher - QS World University Rankings, and our publications in clinical
medicine attract more citations from fellow researchers than any other
university outside North America. Our excellence extends across all
academic disciplines; from one of Europe's largest and most productive
centres for biomedical science interacting with eleven leading London
hospitals, to world-renowned centres for architecture (UCL Bartlett)
and fine art (UCL Slade School).
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) UCL was
rated the best research university in London, and third in the UK
overall, for the number of its submissions which were considered of
'world-leading quality'. The RAE confirmed UCL's multidisciplinary
research strength with outstanding results achieved across the
subjects, ranging from Biomedicine, Science and Engineering, and the
Built Environment to Laws, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. UCL
put forward over 1,800 submissions in 49 of the 67 Units of Assessment.
Details of which can be found here. In the vast majority of UCL's submissions, at least 50% were ranked at
either the highest grade of 4* ('of world-leading quality'), or 3*
('internationally excellent').
