  • UCL has signed an agreement with FARO Europe, under which the company will provide the university with hardware, computer software and staff training.

FARO Europe is a leading manufacturer of mobile 3D laser scanning systems and measurement devices for buildings and large-scale projects. The agreement covers the loan of a 3D scanner to be used in large-scale civil engineering and architectural projects, together with computer software and training of UCL staff.

Led by Professor Alan Penn, Dean of the Bartlett Faculty of Built Environment, and Professor Stuart Robson and Dietmar Backes (UCL Civil Environmental and Geomatic Engineering), with the support of Dr Anna Clark, Director of Business Partnerships and Cengiz Tarhan, Managing Director of UCL Business, this initiative will facilitate collaborative projects between UCL Engineering and the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture, particularly at Masters level.

It is anticipated that the agreement will also lead to the development of commercial projects and research.

Professsor Alan Penn said: "High accuracy geometry capture is set to revolutionise design processes and workflow. We look forward to working with FARO to explore some of the more radical opportunities for creative design afforded by the new technologies. We can trust our students to put the FARO kit to uses never dreamt of by its creators."

Professor Stuart Robson added: "The rapidity, portability and accuracy of the latest generation scanning technologies offer civil engineers and architects exciting new opportunities to document, measure and monitor our surroundings. Working closely with FARO challenges us to refine the technology against industry need and expand our research portfolio as we seek to understand the data collected."

Dr Bernd-Dietmar Becker, Director of Product Management & Business Development 3D-Laser-Scanner, FARO Europe said: "FARO is delighted to have found in the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture and Department of Civil Environmental and Geomatic Engineering very strong collaborators on the quest to bring new technology to the Architectural and Civil Engineering domain. We expect innovative new results, which will increase the benefits as well as simplify the use of 3D Laser Scanners in this industry sector."
