UCL's hazard and risk community will hold a conference, 'Disaster Risk-Reduction for Natural Hazards: Putting Research into Practice', on 4-6 November 2009.

The meeting will bring together researchers and practitioners from academia, civil authorities and the humanitarian, development and business sectors. Its aim is to examine the concept and process of disaster risk reduction, with particular emphasis on multi-hazard environments and multidisciplinary approaches within natural hazards. A key objective is to define ways in which disaster risk reduction may become more effective in the future.

Confirmed keynote speakers and session chairs include: J-C Gaillard (University of Grenoble), Julia Becker (Joint Centre for Disaster Research and GNS Science, New Zealand), Jessica Mercer (CAFOD), Tom Mitchell (Institute of Development Studies) and John Twigg (Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre).

The conference is sponsored by the UCL Disaster Risk Reduction Hub, SPIDER Network, CAFOD, Aon Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre and UCL Grand Challenges, with support from EPICentre and the UCL Development Planning Unit.

'Early-bird' reductions are available for bookings before 28 August 2009.
