As part of UCL's commitment to driving forward its Learning and Teaching Strategy and to improving the student experience, all Faculty Tutors from 1 January 2009 hold full-time appointments, to enable them to commit greater time to giving leadership in such areas as teaching and learning, admissions, and personal tutoring.

In addition, the position of Senior Tutor has been expanded, and in order to reflect this the post will be known from now on as Dean of Students (Academic). The first holder of this post, from 1 January 2009, is Professor Mike Ewing, Professor of Chemistry and currently Vice-Dean and Faculty Graduate Tutor of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences faculty.

Professor Ewing will work closely with Professor Michael Worton, Vice-Provost (Academic and International) to whom he will report; with Chris Hallas, Academic Registrar; and with Registry colleagues, as well as with the Faculty Tutors. He will also work closely with Dr Ruth Siddall, the current Dean of Students, whose title will be modified to Dean of Students (Welfare).

Professor Ewing (pictured right) said: "An early priority will be to enhance further the student experience, especially for overseas students who are at the centre of UCL's strategy for global citizenship."

Professor Michael Worton added: "I am delighted with Mike's appointment and I am looking forward enormously to working with him. We have already been discussing how we can take forward some key developments in enhancing the student experience. 2009 should be an exciting year at UCL."

The renaming of these two key UCL positions reflects the expansion of the Senior Tutor role and is intended to indicate clearly to students and staff alike that while these two Deans of Students will liaise closely at all times, they have distinct responsibilities.
