Conference: Human Right to Health

The UCL Centre for Philosophy, Justice and Health, in association with The Lancet, the UCL Institute of Global Health, and the UCL Institute for Human Rights, will host a conference on the 'Human Right to Health' on Thursday 14 and Friday 15 May.

The conference will continue the debate initiated by The Lancet in December 2008 when it published a special issue on the human right to health, including a ground-breaking examination of right-to-health indicators in 194 countries.  

The conference will bring together healthcare professionals, health activists, human rights lawyers, political scientists and political philosophers. The conference will address how these experts can best take forward and interpret the human right to health.

Speakers include Richard Horton (Editor, The Lancet); Paul Hunt (UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Right to Health 2002-8); and Joseph Raz (Emeritus Professor of Philosophy of Law, Oxford University).

Topics to be examined include: the benefits of using a human rights framework; the institutional implications of attaching advocacy to a human rights framework; the distinctions between a right to health, and a human right to health; and the philosophical analysis of, and possible foundations for, a human right to health.

The conference will take place in JZ Young Anatomy Lecture Theatre, Anatomy Building, UCL, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT. Attendance is free, but registration is compulsory.
