  • The UCLU Islamic Society invites fellow members of the UCL community to join in and help to raise funds as part of Charity Week for Orphans, which works in partnership with Islamic Relief to provide support for orphans around the world.

Established in 2004 by the University of London Union Islamic Society, Charity Week has grown into a successful national event, with over 35 Student Union Islamic Societies participating around the country. £646,000 has been collected over four years by the initiative, and UCLU Islamic Society raised £27,000 through last year's events, a total that the society is keen to surpass for the 2008 event.

    What's on at UCL?

This year, the UCLU Islamic Society will hold a Wii competition in the Front Quad throughout the week, as well as hosting a charity cake stall (with cakes from the famous Hummingbird Bakery) in various different places throughout the university campus (including the UCL Union and in the South Cloisters).

The students will be out and about on different tube stations throughout London collecting for Charity Week on Wednesday the 22nd of October, some dressed up in different costumes to attract attention (including as a boxer and a Tasmanian Devil).

The annual Charity Dinner will be held on 23 October, where Guest Speaker Zahir Mahmood will talk on 'Heart of an Orphan'. Tickets for are £10 with all profits raised going the to charity. Last year, the dinner raised £8000 from student donations and bids on auction items.

Lastly, students will fundraise in several London boroughs.

    About Charity Week
Charity Week is a grass-roots project started in 2004 by a small team of London University students. Organised by the University of London Union Islamic Society (ULU ISoc) and in partnership with Islamic Relief, it remains one of the most successful and powerful projects ULU ISoc organises to date.

The initial aim of the week was to raise awareness amongst youth and communities about the plight of orphans around the world.

Achievements of Charity Week to date include: establishing a clinic for 2000 orphans in Mali, building an orphanage, paying the rent for several orphanages and sponsoring individual orphans in all parts of the world, including Indonesia, India, Niger, Iraq and Bangladesh. Funds left over are being pumped into various projects worldwide to provide orphans with gifts and fun days out.
