UCL's Skills4Work 2008 gets underway

    • The new UCL Skills4Work programme supported by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) begins today and runs throughout autumn and spring terms, with a one-off Global Citizenship and Employability, run in conjunction with UCL Union, event scheduled for 4 November.

    The UCL Skills4Work programme aims to help students understand the skills that recruiters are looking for, and how to sell the skills they develop through their academic course, work experience and extra-curricular activities.

    Phil Howe, Joint Acting Head of Service, UCL Careers Service, said: "These events will provide UCL students with a chance to understand how major employers recruit and what they will need to demonstrate in order to gain their chosen graduate job.

    "We have designed these events to give our students the best chance possible to communicate how their experience and skills match up to the needs of today's employers."

    And Mr Howe stressed the need for students to think about strategies: "UCL graduates will be entering a highly competitive recruitment marketplace and a good degree result alone won't be enough," he added.

    Gary Argent, Business Operations Manager at the AGR, said that they were delighted to be supporting UCL's Skills4Work programme:

    "AGR members recruit graduates into a wide range of industries and we are keen to encourage the development of employability skills as part of the student experience.

    "UCL's innovative approach to workshops and skills activities will help to give students the edge when they begin their search for graduate and placement positions."

    Each session will be run by graduate recruiters and will focus on a particular skill rather than information about the companies running the session, so students are asked to only register based on their need to develop this skill, rather than their interest in a particular company.
