Michael Franklin, director of the Lloyd's Register Educational Trust (LRET), visited UCL Mechanical Engineering on 15 May to hear presentations on ship design and award a scholarship worth £10,000.

Lloyd's Register Educational Trust has awarded its ship design scholarship each year since 2000 to a student studying for the MSc in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering. Awarded on academic merit, the funds initially go towards course fees, with the remainder paid directly to the student.

Michael Franklin, director of the LRET, said: "We are committed to enhancing the safety of life and property at sea, on land and in the air. For many years we've made funds available for this purpose and the scholarship enables us to fund advances in marine technology and support high achievers, with a view to helping them become tomorrow's leaders in their chosen field."

This year's recipient, Marios Dias, said: "It is a great honour to receive this prestigious award from Lloyd's Register Educational Trust. The scholarship will certainly help my time at UCL economically but most importantly is a recognition of the hard work I have put into my studies, and an encouragement to continue with the same pace and determination."

The award was given during a day of presentations from the Ship Design Exercise, an activity undertaken by small teams of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering students as part of their MSc courses. Following a customer's outline requirements, the teams design ships using a suite of preliminary design computer programs. More detailed design work is then carried out with a specialised computer-aided design program for ships (Paramarine).

David Fellows, UCL Mechanical Engineering, who lectures on naval architecture, said of the ongoing support from Lloyd's Register Educational Trust: "The scholarship offers a great opportunity for Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering MSc students to study on these prestigious masters courses at UCL. The Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture MSc's are unusual in offering not only taught and research elements but also the opportunity to undertake a ship design; in the past these designs have covered vessel requirements ranging from corvettes to cruise liners and ship types from conventional monohulls to high-speed trimarans. UCL is delighted to continue the successful collaboration with Lloyd's Register Educational Trust. We are particularly honoured that Mr Michael Franklin has agreed to present the scholarship at a student Ship Design Presentation."
