The second issue of 'Perspectives', a student-led magazine about matters of global health, has now been published. The new issue contains articles on the world of tribal medicine, a debate on whether Barack Obama will bring about a global health revolution, and details on how to shop ethically this Christmas, among others. It also publishes the latest global health news, and book and film reviews.
Vishaal Virani, Medsin UCL's Secretary and the Editor of 'Perspectives', explains the magazine's mission in his 'Letter from the Editor':
"One of the most important aims of the magazine, and of Medsin UCL in general, is to educate and raise awareness of global health issues amongst students. Reflecting on the popularity of the Medsin National Conference in October and this magazine, I sense a great demand for global health education at UCL. The informal opportunities that Medsin UCL provides, through 'Perspectives' and the fortnightly Global Health Series, are extremely valuable."
He believes that, despite these initiatives, "the importance of a formal global health education structure at UCL cannot be understated." Medsin UCL plan to compile various proposals for that purpose, to be put to UCL academics. These include increasing global health education in the medical school curriculum and the availability of course units in global health for non-medical students, and promoting multidisciplinary staff-student interactions around common topics in global health.
The students behind the magazine will be distributing free printed copies at an event on 9 December, from 12-4 pm on the ground floor in the UCL Union at 25 Gordon Street, and offering a free voucher giving 20% off all PasTest books reviewed in the issue. Copies may also be picked up anytime from the UCL Union Clubs & Societies Centre's 2nd floor reception in the UCL Bloomsbury Theatre, Huntley Street, the Rockefeller Café, and various department common rooms around UCL.
