New site for UCL Day Nursery

23 May 2007

The UCL Day Nursery has opened on Gordon Square, bringing day care for babies and toddlers of UCL staff and students onto a single site for the first time.

The nursery is now housed in the basements of 50-51 Gordon Square, which have been combined and converted to accommodate the 38 children aged between three months and five years who were formerly split between 20 Taviton Street and Endsleigh Gardens.

The new site will enable the nursery to offer daily-prepared hot meals for babies for the first time, and there is a cook among the ten-strong staff. Having a single site will also reduce resource and utilities costs, which were previously incurred for two buildings.

UCL staff, parents and children attended the opening. Vice-Provost Marilyn Gallyer, who was instrumental in setting up the first UCL nursery in 1974, thanked UCL Estates & Facilities, UCL Registry, nursery staff and the parents for their efforts in helping the move come to fruition.

President and Provost Professor Malcolm Grant echoed her comments before officially opening the facilities by cutting a ribbon held by children attending the nursery.

The university has been using the site since the end of January, and according to Fiona Harvey, Administrative Manager of the nursery, the babies and toddlers have already settled in very well.
