UCL in the News: String of all the talents may defuse Other Place rebellions

A string of unelected "experts" have been appointed to key government posts by the new Prime Minister, in a move that could thwart rebellions against the government in the Lords.

Dr Meg Russell [UCL Constitution Unit] said the appointment of non-elected cabinet members "creates a bit more of a warm feeling and makes it more difficult to vote against the government" in an upper chamber under no overall control.

"The real test will be whether he relinquishes his powers of patronage to the House of Lords, except for appointment of ministers." …
