Xian nian hao! Happy New Year! Kung hé fat tsoi!

On Tuesday 20 February, UCL held its third annual Chinese New Year celebration with a reception for Chinese students and staff.


Chinese New Year 2

Pro-Provost for China Professor Moira Yip welcomed 250 guests to the South Cloisters for sparkling wine, traditional Chinese jiao-zi dumplings, noodles, and music from the gu-zheng (Chinese zither), played by Yi Dong.

The evening was generously supported by a donation from Strategic China Ltd, whose director Dr Kerry Brown was one of the evening's speakers. Dr Wang Baoqing and Mr Cheng Quansheng from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, Director-General Sarah Wu of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office also each said a few words to wish the students a Happy New Year.

UCL President and Provost Professor Malcolm Grant ended the speeches with a final Happy New Year.

Chinese New Year 3

Among the guests were Mr Stephen Perry, Chairman of The 48 Group Club, and Vice-President of the Campaign for UCL; Lord Woolf, the former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and a member of the Hong Kong Final Court of Appeal; Lord Clement-Jones, Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary China Group; and Miss Mei Sim Lai, OBE, from the Institute of Directors China Group.
