Map of Medicine adopted across NHS

23 April 2007

Software designed by Professor Owen Epstein (UCL Medicine) that empowers GPs and improves hospital administration has been adopted across the NHS.

Cheque presentation

The Map of Medicine is a software tool that enables medical practitioners to follow colour-coded 'decision trees' that indicate primary and secondary care roles in disease management, combined with GP and hospital practice guidelines. It aims to improve administrative processes, empower GPS to manage patients and avoid unnecessary referrals.

Professor Owen Epstein conceived the concept in 2000. The software was developed over five years as the Royal Free Hospital's practitioners created over 340 graphical clinical pathways.

UCL Business PLC supported the Map of Medicine from conception to market. It created the company Medic-to-Medic through which the software was developed. It maximised its commercial potential by negotiating the sale of the company, and the Map of Medicine to the scientific publisher Taylor & Francis, now owned by Informa, in May 2005. Informa has provided the investment needed to deliver the software in line with the requirements of the NHS 'Connecting for Health' programme.

Mr Cengiz Tarhan, Managing Director of UCL Business PLC, commented, "It is extremely gratifying when a project such as this becomes a reality with the potential to transform the way the NHS delivers healthcare in the UK and possibly worldwide."
