Immigration statistics report published

5 October 2006

Professor John Salt and Dr Jane Millar of the Migration Research Unit (UCL Geography) have authored an article in this month's 'Labour Market Trends' that looks at foreign workers in the UK labour market.

The article, called 'Foreign labour in the UK: current patterns and trends', states that there are about 1.5 million foreign workers in the UK and that they account for 5.4 per cent of the total workforce. Furthermore, 2005 saw the largest ever recorded entry of foreign workers into the UK.

Karen Dunnell, the National Statistician at the Office for National Statistics, welcomed the article: "There has been a good deal of debate recently about migration and foreign labour. This article provides a helpful summary of the latest official statistics from various sources."
