New funding for development policy research

31 May 2006

The UK Department for International Development (DfID) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) have awarded funds totalling £650,000 over three years to a project by UCL Economics and the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) looking at human development and poverty reduction in developing countries.

Led by Professor Orazio Attanasio, director of the Centre for the Evaluation of Development Policies (EDePo) at UCL and IFS, the project will look at the environment of poor families in Colombia, Mexico, Nepal and India, and investigate what factors influence an individual's nutrition, health and cognitive skills from childhood to later life. Researchers, drawn from UCL Economics, the UCL Institute of Child Health and EDePo, will use empirical data to evaluate the effects of different policy interventions and will attempt to model the effects of potential future policies.
