Press invite: Launch of new findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

29 June 2006

UCL and the Institute for Fiscal Studies will hold a joint press briefing on Friday 7 July to launch new findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA).

The findings are based on the second wave of ELSA, a longitudinal panel survey. Research from the first wave contributed to the Turner Report, the recent pensions White Paper, 'Security in retirement', a report by the Social Exclusion Unit, 'A sure start to later life', and groundbreaking research on the health differences between older people in the UK and US.

EVENT: Launch of new findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA)

DATE: Friday 7 July 2006, 09.30-10.30am

LOCATION: British Academy, 10 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5AH.

The findings will be presented by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, of the UCL Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, Chair of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) Research and Development Committee and Chair of the World Health Organisation's Commission on Social Determinants of Health.

The study covers people who were aged 50 and over in 2002, and the findings will include analysis of:

* Patterns in health over time, disability, healthy life expectancy and quality of healthcare

* Memory and physical abilities and their importance for independence

* Changes in living patterns as people age

* How our health and social circumstances vary by wealth

* Who retires when and what people do after retirement

* The prevalence of loneliness and variation by age and the nature of social relationships

* Household and family structures

* Expenditure patterns on basics and 'luxuries' and ownership of hi-tech items

The research has been carried out by an interdisciplinary team of researchers, including those from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the UCL Department of Epidemiology & Public Health and the National Centre for Social Research.
