UCL monastic archives exhibit at the British Academy summer reception

6 July 2006

UCL's English Monastic Archives project, based in UCL History, is among the exhibits at today's British Academy summer reception.

The project, which is funded by the British Academy, the Arts & Humanities Research Council, the Marc Fitch Fund and the Scouloudi Foundation, was established to investigate and provide hard copy and electronic access to the documents generated or archived by medieval English monastic houses - the largest category of English medieval documents after those generated by the crown.

A database of the documents is already available on the web, and a three-volume, 800-page book is being printed. Together these resources will be the basis for all future investigations of English monks and nuns in their material and social context.
