EU expansion debate

12 January 2006

A panel discussion and debate on the future expansion of the European Union to the East took place at UCL on 10 January 2006.

'The Expansion of the European Union to the East: Risks and Advantages of the Possible Enlargement to Turkey and the Ukraine and the changing role of Germany and the old Europe' attracted a wide audience from both the UCL community and the wider public.

The speakers, who included the Turkish ambassador to the UK, His Excellency Mr Akin Alptuna and the Deputy Ambassador of Germany, Mr Hans Henning Blomeyer-Bartenstein, discussed Germany's position as one of the founding members of the EU at a time when the country is engaging in considerable public debate about the relative merits and risks of further EU expansion.
