Mishcon de Reya launches scholarship at UCL in memory of Lord Mishcon

6 December 2006

Law firm Mishcon de Reya today announced that it is to establish a scholarship at UCL in memory of its founder, Lord Mishcon (UCL Honorary Fellow 1994), who died in January of this year.

The Mishcon de Reya scholarship will be the top academic award offered for a UCL masters degree in law, and will be awarded on an annual basis to the student with the most outstanding academic achievement.

Lord Mishcon, one of the UK's most respected lawyers, was granted his practising certificate in 1937 at the tender age of 21 when he founded Victor Mishcon & Co, only standing down as Senior Partner of the renamed Mishcon de Reya in 1992. In recognition of his distinguished career as a solicitor and his considerable contribution to many areas of public life, Lord Mishcon was made Honorary Queen's Counsel in 1992 on the recommendation of The Lord Chancellor - the first practising solicitor to be so appointed. He was made Honorary Member of the Law Society for life in 1994, also on recommendation of The Lord Chancellor.

The scholarship was announced today by the Dean of UCL Laws at the Annual Mishcon Lecture at UCL, attended by guest speaker Baroness Helena Kennedy.

Commenting on the scholarship, Professor Michael Bridge, Dean of UCL Laws, said: "UCL Laws is delighted with the substantial graduate scholarship generously granted by Mishcon de Reya. In 2007, the faculty launches its own independent LLM after a long period of collaboration with other London colleges on a joint masters degree. This scholarship will play a major part in attracting strong applicants to the new degree programme."

Kevin Gold, Managing Partner at Mishcon, said: "Lord Mishcon created an ethos within our firm of nurturing and developing talent. We can think of no more fitting tribute than a scholarship in his memory."
