Ulster firm puts crime on the map

3 August 2006

A Newtownabbey company has joined forces with the UCL Jill Dando Institute of Crime Sciences in London to put Ulster crime on the map.

Northgate Information Solutions will help … develop an educational tool on geographical information systems and crime mapping.

Crime mapping involves mapping out crime in local areas to obtain a greater understanding of crime trends. It combines a series of crime maps and information to get a stronger understanding of a crime situation. …

Spencer Chainey, director of GIS at the UCL Jill Dando Institute, said: "Crime mapping is playing an increasing role in policing, crime reduction and community safety.

"But what has been lacking is some of the theory that helps put GIS training into a better context.

"We are delighted to work with Northgate on the development of this educational tool. We hope that as a result the geographical analysis of crime is integrated more into intelligence development and decision-making."
