17 August 2005

Event: 9th Econometric Society World Congress Date: Thursday 18 to Wednesday 24 August 2005 Venue: UCL ( University College London ), Gower Street , London , WC1E 6BT The economics of immigration, education, smoking, fertility and drug trafficking will be among the topics discussed at the ninth Econometric Society World Congress, which will be hosted by the UCL Department of Economics from 18-24 August 2005.

The Econometric Society is the leading international learned society in the field of economics, and its quinquennial world congress is recognised as the most prestigious in economics.

It is the first time the Congress has been held in London and has not been hosted by a UK institute for 35 years.

The field of econometrics focuses on applying economics data and mathematics to describing, understanding and predicting the economy. It is used in macroeconomics and monetary policy; and assessing the effectiveness of education, welfare and health policy.

The 1500 delegates attending include many top economists with expertise across a range of disciplines. Four Nobel Laureates will present key sessions on unemployment, electoral strategy and industrial organisation. The Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) has organised a series of policy workshops.

Over 1000 papers will be presented over the six-day Congress with the proceedings being published by Cambridge University Press.

All sessions will be open to journalists who have registered to attend by contacting the UCL press office. Press conferences on key papers will also be held.
