The High Commissioner was keen to discuss how Singapore and UCL could forge stronger links and encourage more Singaporian students to take up study at the university. The meeting was followed by an informal lunch attended by UCL students and staff from Singapore.

The High Commissioner began the lunch by saying: "There are three main reasons why I am here today. Firstly because of the very high standards of UCL, secondly because we have many students in Singapore and we want them to have the best education possible and thirdly because education is a key factor in developing Singapore as a knowledge based economy and institutions like UCL can help us achieve this."

Professor Grant visited Singapore in March 2004 as part of a wider tour of South East Asia where he met with UCL alumni and leading figures in business and politics.
