UCL Professors awarded Queen's birthday honours

Two UCL professors have been acknowledged in the 2004 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Professor Michael Batty was awarded a CBE for services to geography and Professor Annette Karmiloff-Smith was also awarded a CBE, for services to cognitive development.

Professor Batty, Director of UCL's Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, has, over the course of his career as an academic geographer and planner, made a sustained contribution to understanding the quality of life in cities throughout the western world through his advocacy for computer-based urban planning and design. Technologies created by Professor Batty have been used for many high profile design projects, including the Cardiff Bay development in the 1980s. His recent research includes the redesign of the Notting Hill Carnival route to improve the safety for its 1.5 million participants.

Professor Karmiloff-Smith, Head of the Neurocognitive Development Unit at UCL's Institute of Child Health, has worked extensively in the fields of normal cognitive development and abnormal development. Since 1989, Professor Karmiloff-Smith has specialised in developmental cognitive neuroscience, and current research investigates many aspects of abnormal development in infants with Down's Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, Fragile X and Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome.

This year's list comprised 15 MBEs, 21 CBEs and 24 OBEs with links to higher and further education.
