UCL storm forecasters team up with Reuters

14 April 2004

A new partnership between UCL and Reuters could lead to hundreds of lives being saved.

The TSR forecast windfield for hurricane Isabel striking the USA in September 2003 Tropical Storm Risk (TSR), a venture led by UCL's Benfield Hazard Research Centre, is the leading resource for forecasting tropical storms worldwide. TSR will now feed live storm warnings to Reuters AlertNet, a humanitarian news portal.

TSR's website tracks all active tropical storm systems, such as hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones. The forecasts are updated every 6-12 hours to provide the latest available information.

Reuters AlertNet provides round-the-clock news and information on humanitarian emergencies for the international disaster relief community. By integrating TSR's data, relief charities will be able to plan their emergency response when storms target populated areas.

UCL's Dr Mark Saunders, Head of Seasonal Forecasting & Meteorological Hazards, said: "We are delighted to provide this new warning service to the international disaster relief community. Early access to clear and accurate info.
