'Music & the Mind Festival' to unite UCL, NLO and local community

10 February 2003

UCL staff and students and members of resident orchestra the New London Orchestra's education team are conducting workshops and seminars in conjunction with the local community to examine the link between music, emotion and perception.

The New London Orchestra will explore music through science at the ‘Music & the Mind Festival’ The workshops are the first in a series of events linked to the 'Music & the Mind Festival', which takes place from 27 to 30 April 2003 at UCL.

Children and adults with autism, hearing and vision impairments and other physical and mental disabilities will take part in sessions designed to challenge pre-conceived ideas of disability by teaching participants to use music as a creative form of self expression.

Dr Julian Knight, general manager of the orchestra, explains: "We hope that these sessions will give us a better insight into the working of the brain, as well as enriching the lives of all involved."

The festival itself will explore current scientific understanding of how the brain perceives, produces and appreciates music through debates, concerts, lectures and workshops. International classical and jazz musicians will be joined by leading scientists for this unique event, with Baroness Susan Greenfield chairing the opening debate 'Musical Talent: Nature or Nurture?'.
