The AIChE - American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Meeting is the perfect place to meet, celebrate our colleagues, make new friends, and get the latest chemical engineering progress from up-and-coming talent and renowned experts.

Marc-Olivier CoppensDr. Nidhi KapilDr. Matthew Chin, Adriana Bernardes and Lucy Todd, all from the NICE Group at the CNIE, presented work at the conference.

Adriana gave a talk of her work on “Nature-Inspired Hydrodynamic Techniques to Enhance Membrane Separation Performance.” These membrane-based filtration processes are increasingly used in industrial applications such as water treatment. Dr. Mathew Chen presented his work on “Extracellular Matrix-Inspired 3D Microprinted Tumor Microenvironment Models”, which holds great potential to inspire new strategies for microenvironment engineering and cell delivery methods to improve cancer immunotherapies. Dr. Nidhi Kapil gave two talks in the conference, with first talk on “Gold Nanoparticles Anchored Onto Polymer Brushes As Robust Anti-Microbial Surfaces” and second talk on “A Nature-Inspired Approach to Design Hierarchical Zeolites As Efficient Catalysts for Bio-Syngas to Olefins Conversion.”

Lucy Todd was honoured to place 3rd in the AiChE 8B Graduate Student Award session where her talk, “Time for a new home? Nature Inspired 3D scaffolds to improve cell culturing environments for cancer immunotherapy” sparked great interest. Lucy Todd  also presented two posters: “Lion Software: A Roaring Transformation in Data Visualization” and “Constructing 3D Voronoi Structures: A Toolkit with Biomedical Case Studies” where her 2nd poster wins first place award from AIChE Computing & Systems Technology Division.

A personal highlight of this year's AIChE annual meeting from Professor Coppens was the celebration of 200 years of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and 110 years of RPI's Chemical and Biological Engineering department, where he was a professor from 2006-2012. Organised by his good friend and Department Chair Professor Joel Plawsky, there were three fabulous sessions of presentations by current academics and friends of the department, covering tremendous research and great stories, followed by a reception.Porfessor Coppens gave a talk reflecting on the nurturing environment, wonderful colleagues and students of RPI, making it such a special place. He also discussed how the capstone chemical process design course at RPI shaped the way for him to develop the NICE course at UCL.
