Prof Ian Ford

Ian is Chair of the Board of Examiners in the Natural Sciences programme, responsible for making sure that the numerous assessments undertaken by students are translated into progression from year to year and ultimately the award of the appropriate degree. Prior to joining UCL, he did a DPhil in elementary particle physics and then worked for the UK Atomic Energy Authority on various issues in condensed matter and materials physics. He is based in the Department of Physics and Astronomy where he has taught a number of topics including statistical physics and stochastic mathematics. Having benefitted from a Natural Sciences degree programme himself, he is keen on the straddling of disciplines in his research, with examples including the quantum thermodynamics of qubits, and the passage of proteins through polymer tangles in cell membranes.

Teaching

Ian is the module lead on the following modules:

Advanced Topics in Statistical Mechanics (PHAS0061)

and is part of the teaching team on the following modules:

Quantum Physics (PHAS0022)

Statistical Physics of Matter (PHAS0024)

Foundations of Quantum Mechanics (NSCI0035)
