Project Title: Arab Heritage of Comics
Research Supervisor: Professor Laurence Grove
Dr. Ammar Hashim Merza, Lecturer at University of Mosul, received a visiting scholarship at University of Glasgow. As part of the Visiting Scholarship, Dr Ammar explores the Arab/Iraqi heritage and the long legacy of comics and graphic narratives series that target adult and child audiences and issues. The project surveys the indigenous graphic novels and comics from the region; fiction and non-fiction and the graphic adaptations of comics in the Arab world in general and particularly in Iraq. This includes shedding light on monographs, pictures, images, and edited volumes regarding scholarly research on Arab/Iraqi comics, comics artists' production of comics, and graphic narratives. The project considers the introduction of comics and sequential art in Iraq from its earliest times up to the present day.
