Heritage Buildings of Kufa

The city of Kufa lies in the east of the Najaf governorate in southern Iraq. The project “Heritage Buildings of Kufa” aims to enhance awareness of heritage buildings in the city, and to promote sustainable protection among the community and local authorities. Implementation involves documenting buildings, recording structural and architectural elements, setting up an inventory database, as well as promoting knowledge among students, local politicians, and the local community.

Research Design and Methodology

  1. Literature review on the history and heritage buildings of Kufa.

  2. Several training workshops have been held for students of Kufa University and the local SBAH employees on cultural inventories, documentation and oral history and the related methods.
  3. The trainees then conducted cultural inventory for the heritage buildings in Kufa and documented oral history with people currently living in these houses.
  4. Documentation of sample buildings (house, hammam. khan) by preparing maps and surveys.
  5. Review of methods and materials to prepare curriculum and teaching materials for new courses on heritage values and heritage protection.
