Linen production features so large in Egyptian life that references are frequent in manuscripts and inscriptions. However, without study of the contemporary textiles and tools of production, written evidence is easily misinterpreted. The three examples below may illustrate the difficulties in reading ancient letters and documents, where the vocabulary and conventions of writing are so different from our own.
