Petrie explains in his first publication (Petrie 1913: 1) of the site: 'a distinctive name is required for the early remains, which are the more important, this volume is named from the nearest village Tarkhan'.

Petrie therefore used the name Kafr Ammar for burials of later date in the same series of cemeteries.
