Saqqara: The Sacred Animal Necropolis

The temple precinct.

The precinct was entered from the west, the ascending path supported as it approaches the west precinct wall; there was also a sacred processional way from the south (white on the plan). Cliff-face shrines covered the entrances to each of the rock-cut catacombs for mummified animals and birds.
