The cemeteries of Egypt are rich in human remains. However surprisingly little research has been done so far to examine these remains, beyond the isolated examples of individual mummies, almost invariably without archaeological documentation, unwrapped often in front of audiences in theatrical manner. Several mummies have been examined in more scientific manner in recent years, but few studies have addressed populations of cemeteries more widely. Earlier research, for example those of Petrie, concentrated on questions of ethnicity (Petrie 1914: 24-26). Recent research has tended more towards issues such as age of death, health and other social questions.
