The Impact of 3D VR Reconstructions: Oxyrhynchus

Question - One aim of this model is to reveal the extent to which Egypt became integrated into the Greek and Roman world. Does this model bring home to you the Hellenization of Egypt? better than other media?

A VRML model of the Oxyrhynchus Theatre (3.2MB)

A selection of JPEG still images of Oxyrhynchus

Background information on Oxyrhynchus

Comments on the model: Despite that we do not have the precise plan of the Oxyrhynchus Theatre, we could propose a fairly detailed 3D reconstruction based on the layout and designs found on other theatres from that period that were better preserved. The model itself is much easier to build than reconstructing ancient cities, which are bound to be more irregular and also massive.

Evidence: Most parts of the theatre are today destroyed. An excavation gave an idea of the size and the general outline. For most part of the reconstruction other better preserved theatres were taken as prototypes.

Does the Oxyrhynchus question emerge from the pages?

Does the reconstruction help you learn about the site, or impose itself as reality?
