Pottery: UC 33438
Part of African Red Slip ware plate, made up from two adjoining pieces. Stamped decoration of circle in centre with radiating palm branches, alternating with fringed concentric circles. Encircled by two grooves, palm branches, light groove and low ridge. Base of side of plate preserved at end of smaller piece.
The body clay of African Red Slip ware is often coarse. The colour is orange-red to brick red. There is a small number of highly standardised types. The decoration is stamped, incised or modelled.
date: late Roman or Byzantine Period (about fourth - seventh century AD)
